FLTC was formed in 1884 on the grounds of the R Martello tower. At one time the tower itself was nearly used as the tennis clubhouse but the remains now form part of the walls of the nearby Bartlet Hospital.
In the 1920’s the club enjoyed close association with the ‘finest hotel on the East coast’ the Felix Hotel (now Harvest House). Luxury accommodation was provided with tea, cakes, bread and butter brought by waiters to the tennis players and spectators.
Many of the world’s finest players have graced these courts, including the world champion Fred Perry and more recently Tim Henman, Amelie Mauresmo and Andy Murray.
